K-cup Collection & Compost Program

We here at AM Coffee Shack are delighted to announce the introduction of our exciting new K cup collection program!

Working in conjunction with a school in the Peel School Board, we will be collecting used K cups for students to use as part of their gardening program.

How does that work?

Not only will the children will be utilizing the used coffee grounds as fertilizer for their plants, but they will also be making use of the K cups themselves.

How you ask?

The used K cups will be used to start the seedlings, rather than purchasing and then disposing of plastic trays! Once the seedlings are planted, any of the k cups that are recyclable can be cleaned of dirt and recycled.

What a great idea!

So, until June, we will be collecting all used K cups at our retail location at:

1-4646 Heritage Hills Blvd.
Mississauga, ON
L5R 1Y3

If you are interested in participating in this program, please bring us your used K cups in a bag or box. Also, PLEASE ensure that the cups are free of any additional food or garbage (only K cups/coffee grounds in the bag or box).

Fun Facts

There are many benefits to using coffee grounds as fertilizer in gardening. The grounds not only add organic material to the soil, but also improving drainage, water retention, and aeration.

Additionally, the used coffee grounds help microorganisms beneficial to plant growth thrive, as well as attracting earthworms.

A great fertilizer

As a fertilizer, used coffee grounds are slightly acidic and are full of nitrogen—a mineral that aids vegetable and plant growth. Coffee grounds are particularly good for tomato plants, which thrive on nitrogen.

As coffee grounds decompose, they also release nitrogen, potassium, phosphorus, and other minerals that support plant growth.

Some of the plants that thrive in nitrogen-rich soil include: leafy vegetables (such as spinach), tomatoes, corn, roses, camellias, rhododendrons, and azaleas.
